Reprint of the seventh and final edition of one of the finest translations of the Institutes. Commissioned by the Emperor Justinian in 530 CE, the body of writings known collectively as the Corpus Juris Civilis restated all existing Roman law. It has four components: the Code, Novels, Institutes and Digest. Intended for students, the Institutes is a synopsis of the reformed legal system. Rediscovered during the late middle ages, it has been the central textbook of Roman law ever since. Sandars published his edition in 1853. The quality of the translation and the excellence of its notes assured its success. Immediately popular, it went through seven editions and several issues. The work includes the Latin text and a parallel English translation with English commentary. lxxx, 608 pp. | The Institutes of Justinian With English Introduction Translation and Notes (1917) by Thomas Collett Sandars, Hardcover | Indigo Chapters
