Excerpt from The First English Conquest of Canada: With Some Account of the Earliest Settlements in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland The first two years of his reign was spent by Charles in continual struggles with his Parliament. They would grant him no money, and when he pressed for a subsidy, they presented a petition of grievances, and said they would grant the money when their petition was answered. The Earl of Bristol accused Buckingham before the House of Lords of various crimes and misdemeanours and the House of Commons had impeached him before the Lords; and so strong was their language against him, that Sir John Eliot compared him, for lust, ambition, and rapacity, to Sejanus, the profligate minister of Tiberius Caesar. Charles, determined to shield his favourite, dissolved Parliament in a transport of fury. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
