American artist Jackson Pollock was a key figure in the abstract expressionist movement, famous for his action or ‘drip’ paintings. To create these, he placed his canvas on the ground and poured, flung, or trailed paint around it as he moved. Pollock said this process gave each work ‘a life of its own.’
