Jerry Evans was a student-athlete in high school and at UCLA. He played basketball for John Wooden, competed in track for Ducky Drake, both coaching legends, and played on the second UCLA Volleyball team to win a national collegiate volleyball championship before volleyball became an NCAA sport. He was involved in sports for most of his life. Upon graduation from UCLA, he received an ROTC commission as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in the US Army. He served in the Army for 25 years in both Infantry and Military Intelligence. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving in Korea, Panama, Germany, Vietnam, and the United States. After the Army, he was the Human Resource Director for the St Francis Hotel in San Francisco and later a Labor Relations/Management Consultant for 14 major hotels in San Francisco. He is now retired, living with his wife, Rose, in Rancho Mirage, CA. Their combined family has given them 8 children, 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
