Diabetes is a serious condition with potentially devastating complications that affects people of all age groups worldwide. In 2009, more than 2.4 million Canadians were thought to have diabetes, a 240% increase over the previous decade. By 2019 that number is expected to rise to 3.7 million. A multi-faceted approach utilizing an inter-professional team has been shown to effectively lower the development and progression of complications in diabetes. Integrating the latest Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines, the goal of this guidebook is to translate research and evidence-based recommendations into everyday clinical practice, and help all members of the team more effectively manage their diabetic patients. About the Author Dr. Ludwig has been a practising endocrinologist for more than 20 years, with approximately 75% of her practice involving the long-term care of people with type 2 diabetes. Dr. Ludwig has been actively involved in the development of the Canadian Diabetes Association''s Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Diabetes since 1998. A full-time faculty member at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Ludwig has spent considerable time teaching medical students, physicians in post-graduate training programs, family physicians in practice, and allied health care professionals, including diabetes educators, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, and social workers.
