Blended from equal portions of Domaine de la Chapelle's Hermitage Syrah and Penfolds' old-vine Shiraz from the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley. The wines were made separately and aged in oak, the French portion in 20% new barrels, the Australian portion in 100% new, before being blended in Australia. Smooth creaminess and fresh, ripe, crushed blueberry for now dominates the nose, showing the youthfulness of the wine, still brimming with primary Shiraz fruit. More air adds a lovely scent of clean, cold ashes and slight smokiness. The superbly smooth palate shows ripe, detailed tannins that have some of the sumptuousness of fine, dark chocolate; but all is pervaded by a bright, appetising freshness. A very apt combination of ripeness and freshness that culminates in elegance. While charming now, this will only come into its own with some bottle age. Drinking window: 2028-2060. Score - 96.
