Left Behind in Holly Grove tells the story of the essence of the Black family and how it stood the test of time during a very difficult period of growth in American History. The struggles the family suffered did not diminish the integrity of the family foundation; their strength was the bond of love the family shared while banding together to work through this difficult period of growth and development. The family maintained its family values and principals regardless of the situation or circumstances. Their strength grew out of having both the father and mother in the home and the willingness of all to sacrifice for each other to achieve a common goal. Although it may have seemed like the worst of times during segregation and separation, it was also the best of times - a time of family unity, family respect, and building character and strength in each member of the household. Left Behind in Holly Grove tells the story, as seen through the eyes of a young black girl, of being raised by her aunt and uncle in the deep south during a time of segregation. It tells of how the family held onto their ethical, moral, and Christian values, despite the oppression the family was forced to live through. These same values are what allowed her to rise to a higher level and standard of life.
