L-Tryptophan

ʟ‑Tryptophan is an essential amino acid—“essential” means the body can’t synthesize it and must acquire it through diet. This amino acid is pivotal for the production of serotonin, melatonin, and niacin. Serotonin and melatonin stabilize both mood and sleep patterns; niacin regulates digestive function for optimal metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Supplementation with ʟ‑tryptophan can also increase levels of the chemical messengers dopamine and norepinephrine, neurotransmitters that affect pleasure and alertness.
