- Ideally, toenails should be cut when wet to prevent cracking and breaking. Keep the bottom of the clipper as close to the bottom of the nail bed as possible. Starting at one side of the nail, clip ingrown toenail in a straight line even with the tip of the toe, being careful not the cut the skin. Once the nail is cut, grasp the corner and gently pull it out. It is important that toenails are cut straight across, and not too short, as this may contribute to ingrown toenails. Sanitize area and clipper with alcohol.
