This formulation of the Jesus Prayer is based on Matthew 15:25, the plea of the Canaanite woman who knelt before Jesus and pleaded on behalf of her afflicted daughter, “Lord, help me!” Because of its simplicity, this formulation is suitable for use in every situation of daily life. The practitioner adopts the humble, faith-filled attitude of the Canaanite woman each time they entreat, “Lord Jesus, help me!”This book addresses the pressing need to make Christian spiritual practices more accessible to ordinary Christians in their busy lives today. There are good treatments of the Jesus Prayer that focus on its origin, historical development, and its place in the contemplative tradition of the Christian East. While this traditional form and prayer method continues to have an important role in Christian contemplation, some adaptation will make this Prayer more accessible. Furthermore, while the traditional Prayer of the Heart requires vigorous discipline to quiet the mind and cultivate a prayerful habit, this adapted form allows the practitioner to begin wherever they are and in whatever situation they find themselves. The key to this adapted form is to name one’s thoughts and feelings and turn them into prayer.
