Achille is a work of historical fiction in the genres of historical romance, military thriller, and espionage. The book centers around the building of the USS Iroquois (1859) in the New York Navy Yard in the late 1850s. Achille tells the story of the US Navy men and their supporters who built the sloop-of-war so it could be sent to Sicily to support Giuseppe Garibaldi and ""the thousand"" volunteers in the unification of Italy. It is also a story of second chances and love. Achille highlights the roles of women and men in the broader community of the New York Navy Yard and internationally, who wove the flags and supported this aspect of our world history. The story gives insight into assistance from England, the Church, Hungarians, Italians, and Sicilians. Included are photos of USS Iroquois, statue of Garibaldi, and view of New York from the Yard. Synopsis:John Kane is an Officer in the US Navy in 1858. Having just ran a Navy ship aground in Barbados chasing slavers, Kane surmises his career is over. But the Italian unification is fomenting, and the US Navy needs a leader in the New York Navy Yard to build a new vessel and sail for Sicily to assist Giuseppe Garibaldi in the fight. Commander Palmer convinces the Navy brass to give Kane a second chance. Dottie, John Kane's girlfriend, worries she could lose him in a second mishap at sea. Palmer's wife and the women weave the flags for the men, while Otis and other supporters build USS Iroquois in the bustling Yard. With his trusty dog, Wolf, at his side, Officer Kane takes compass in hand to lead the men. While Naval intelligence works with English counterparts and the Church to unify the common purpose, the Yard community comes together with the President of the United States in a gallant affair to see the men off. At sea, Kane keeps Dottie close to heart while he leads the men. The fight is intense. Kane learns the power of men and women working together and what it means for the legacy of the Yard and country. | Achille by Craig Christopher Hook, Paperback | Indigo Chapters
