As he stumbled into adulthood in the 1960s, he not only experienced personal milestones, he also witnessed worldwide events such as the Viet Nam War, the hippie era of “free love,” and the explosion of Beatlemania. The quiet post-war era of the 1950s was going through a dramatic transformation. On the world stage, colonial empires were disintegrating and newly independent nations were looking for teachers to help augment their education systems. Organizations such as the Peace Corps in the United States and Canadian University Services Overseas (CUSO) in Canada answered the call and were looking for volunteers to take on the challenge. This sequel describes Houston’s life during the 1960s: starting university, falling in love, getting married, achieving his B.A., and ultimately making the decision, along with his wife Cheryl, to join Cuso. It describes their many adventures and misadventures during their two-year sojourn in Kenya, teaching in an all-boys secondary school, learning about African life and culture, and even having a baby. Kenya has changed dramatically over the past 50 years, but readers will appreciate Houston’s description of a volunteer’s life in a remote corner of Kenya during the 1960s.
