Twelve Years a Slave is the astonishing true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped in Washington D.C. in 1841 and then sold into slavery—for twelve long years. The story was written by Northup upon his release. Solomon Northup was a free-born African American from New York. He was the son of a freed slave. He was a farmer and violinist and owned a property in Hebron. In 1841, he was kidnapped by slave-traders, who enticed him with a job offer as a violinist. When he accompanied his supposed employers to Washington, DC, they drugged him and sold him into slavery. Before he had a chance to explain the situation (not that anyone believed him) or contact his family, he was shipped to New Orleans where he was sold to a plantation owner in Louisiana. He was held against his will in the Red River region of Louisiana by several different owners for twelve years, during which time his friends and family had no idea where he was, or if he was even alive. He made repeated attempts to escape and get messages out of the plantation. Eventually, he got news to his family, who contacted friends and enlisted the help of the Governor of New York, Washington Hunt.
