Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer (1783-1860) performed as a cellist with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and later in the orchestra of the Dresden Staatskappelle where he played in the premieres of Wagner's operas Rienzi and The Flying Dutchman. In 1842 he was singled our for praise by Hector Berlioz: Besides the outstanding artists whom I have already named, there is the excellent professor Dotzauer. He leads the violoncellists". The 3 volumes of Dotzauer's Violoncellschule (Cello School) (also available from Edition Peters), and the 4 volumes of his 113 Exercises are among the foundations of the educational cello literature. This second volume of Exercises contains studies 63 to 85 of the 113 progressive exercises in the classic Edition Peters 'Green Series' edition by Johannes Klingenberg."
